Readmissions after cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy—a national population-based study

Abstract: Background Comprehensive readmission morbidity studies after cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) are scarce. This study aimed to investigate readmissions and in-hospital morbidity after CRS and HIPEC. Methods The national in-hospital patient register was used to identify patients via the HIPEC ICD code JAQ10 2004–2014. Data were retrieved from the index CRS/HIPEC treatment and from all HIPEC-related readmissions within 6 months. Univariate/multivariate logistical … Show more

“…11 Beyond 90 days, age and intraoperative colonic resection have been reported as the only independent risk factors for 6-month readmission. 21 In our study cohort, we found similar rates of early and late readmission of 18.5% and 7.4%, respectively, with a majority of RA occurring within 2 weeks post discharge. Postoperative readmission has been reported to be related to adverse survival outcomes in patients who had undergone surgery for cancers of various organs, such as brain, pancreas, esophagus, and stomach.…”

“…Most of the initial studies reported very high morbidity and mortality with CRS and HIPEC [ 29 , 30 ]. However, with increasing experience, contemporary studies are reporting an acceptable rate of morbidity and mortality [ 24 , 31 – 33 ]. In the current study, perioperative morbidity occurred in 28.0% of patients.…”

“…The time frame for postoperative adverse events was expanded to 6 months in order to investigate possible late HIPEC-related readmissions, as an earlier study found that the readmission rate is quite high due to late adverse events. 19 This study was approved by the Regional Ethics Board, Uppsala, Sweden (reference no. 2007/073).…”
