Reading Comprehension in Parkinson's Disease

Abstract: Individuals in the early stages of PD without dementia or broad cognitive deficits can display reading comprehension difficulties, particularly for high- versus basic-level reading tasks. These reading difficulties are most closely related to memory, high-level language, and PD symptom severity status. The findings warrant additional research to delineate further the types and nature of reading comprehension impairments experienced by individuals with PD.

“…Previous studies documented that the Parkinson’s disease-related visual damages ranged from deficits in basic perceptual and semantic visual processing at an early stage of cognitive deterioration (Laatu et al 2004; Cardoso et al 2010), problems in motion and orientation discrimination (Bodis-Wollner and Paulus 1999; Trick et al 1994) to even visual hallucinations (Barnes and David 2001; Mindham 2001). The observed modification of nodal efficiency in the right ANG might account for the non-motor symptoms of patients with Parkinson’s disease such as linguistic deficits and executive dysfunction (Altmann and Troche 2011; Kudlicka et al 2011; Murray and Rutledge 2014; Shirer et al 2012). Meanwhile, decreased efficiency in the left PoCG might be associated with the motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease, which was consistent with a previous study (Sharman et al 2013).…”

“…These cognitive changes result in deficits in attention, episodic and working memory, and executive functions (Pfeiffer et al 2014), which are integral to the comprehension and expression of language (Hancock et al 2011). People with PD have been shown to demonstrate impairment in comprehension of long and complex sentences (Colman et al 2011) and paragraph text (Murray and Rutledge 2014), and their ability to interpret figurative language and humour, and identify speech intentions (Monetta et al 2009). Expression of language has been found to be impaired in relation to word-finding ability and verbal fluency (Burdick et al 2014), and the generation of sentences (Troche and Altmann 2012).…”

“…Teškoće u razumevanju pročitanog, naročito složenog jezičkog materijala, utvrđene su ne samo kod pacijenata s demencijom već i kod osoba sa PB bez demencije (Murray & Rutledge, 2014). Takođe je pokazano da je govor fluentniji prilikom čitanja, nego pri spontanoj produkciji (Vuković, 2019a;Weir-Mayta et al, 2017).…”
