This study explores the idea of place in Nadeem Aslam’s The Golden Legend (2017) to frame the identity crisis befalling the Christian community in Pakistan as a mirror of the similar experiences of marginalized groups in Britain. As a British novel expected to be read by Western readers, the depiction of the marginalization happening in Pakistan is utilized to allude to the condition outside the country: a paradox. The depicted paradox also recalls the history of Islam’s development in Türkiye and Spain, represented by the Hagia Sofia and the Great Mosque. The loss of ‘home’ causes the marginalized to wander in Pakistan, and, at the same time, they try to establish their identities and be remembered by society, both in the sense ofbelonging and of inhabiting memory. It is the same with the unsettled immigrant of Muslim Pakistanis, begging for their citizenship and being acknowledged in Britain. This analysis is based on Bhabha’s notion of unhomeliness and Derrida’s host and guest concept, composing an understanding that having no exact ‘home’, the Christian community being a guest to the Muslim community whose territory is obligated to preserve, is treated inappropriately. With these findings, we argue that wandering through places in Pakistan is an action determining whether one’s self is constructed or otherwise, illustrating Muslims in Britain having the same fate by remembering the golden legend told in the novel.

Representation of Hybrid Identities in Nadeem Aslam’s The Golden Legend: A Transitivity Analysis

This study undertakes the analysis of the hybrid discourse using transitivity model (Halliday, 1985) to uncover the ideology that is fabricated with the linguistic choices for specific meanings, conveyed in a text. These meanings can only be explored by examining how language makes them. This study aims to explore the hybrid identities of the characters under the influence of the horror, fear and violence made by both the Muslim extremists and the Americans in Pakistan. This study, based on the hybrid identities, indicates that the characters want to give themselves voice one way or the other mostly using the material process, verbal process and the mental process to highlight the respective position for themselves in the imperialist world and to fulfill their repressed desires. It has been found out in the study that the characters violate the societal and the religious ties sometimes by hiding themselves from the society and sometimes openly to foreground their hybrid identities. The process material, the participant goal and the circumstance location highly occur in the hybrid discourse whereas the least usage is of the process behavioural, the participant behaver and the circumstance contingency.

In seeming response to rising global interest in the condition of non-Muslims in parts of the Muslim world, recent fictions by anglophone Pakistani writers have explored how the country's Christians are positioned as lesser subjects. Such literature speaks to legitimate concerns about the welfare of religious minorities in Muslim-majority contexts, but may also risk reproducing "'recruitable' narratives" which situate Christians and Muslims on either side of an unbridgeable religio-cultural divide. This article investigates how Nadeem Aslam's (2017) The Golden Legend depicts Christian experiences of religious discrimination and coexistence within the Islamic Republic. It argues that Aslam's fiction revisits savages-victims-saviour trichotomies and demystifies religious offence, bringing to light alternative configurations of Muslim-Christian relationships and ways of understanding points of contention. Acknowledging the limitations of Aslam's liberal humanist vision, it hopes to identify how novels like Legend extend available representations at a time when critical perspectives on interfaith cohabitation require careful articulation.
