PurposeFace-to-face tutorial sessions remain an integral part of the delivery mode of distance education in Ghana. It is sometimes used as the sole mode of delivery of educational content in some distance education institutions. This study, therefore, investigated the interconnectedness of elements of face-to-face tutorials among distance education students.Design/methodology/approachThe study adopted the positivist approach and used descriptive research as a design. Simple random and stratified sampling techniques were used, and a sample of 1,491 students was drawn from a population of 44,001 across all regions of Ghana. Data were collected with a self-administered questionnaire and analysed with descriptive and inferential statistics.FindingsThe study found that collaborative learning, counselling, self-directed learning, motivation and critical thinking had strong interrelationships as elements of face-to-face tutorials.Research limitations/implicationsThis quantitative study was limited to the views of students on the elements of face-to-face tutorials. It was envisaged, however, that the views of the tutors and administrators who conducted the face-to-face tutorials could have enriched the findings of the study. In addition, adopting a mixed design approach where both qualitative and quantitative data were collected from the participants could have given an in-depth and enriched perspective of the current study.Practical implicationsManagement of distance education institutions need to focus on these important elements and their inter-relationships as they might lead to improved academic and social progress among students. In addition, institutions must also organise orientations and seminars for course facilitators and new students on the need to develop commitments towards the elements of face-to-face tutorials as requirement so as to succeed on their course of study.Originality/valueThis is a novel approach that will help improve the understanding of students on the importance of the activities they engage in during face-to-face tutorials. It would also help managers of institutions using face-to-face tutorials to focus on these important elements that might lead to improved academic work among students.

Background: Cultural intelligence has been described as an essential intelligence for the 21st century that can increase students' adaptability, problem-solving skills, and influence their performance and learning vitality. Aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between cultural intelligence and academic vitality with selfdirected learning among nursing students. Design: Descriptive, correlational study design was adopted. Setting:The study was conducted at Faculty of Nursing, Tanta University. Subjects: All fourth year nursing students (n=295) were included. Tools: Three tools for data collection were used to achieve the aim of this study; Cultural Intelligence Scale, Academic Vitality Questionnaire and Self-Directed Learning Instrument (SDLI). Results: As a result of the conducted study revealed that there is a high level of culture intelligence and academic vitality with moderate level of self-directed learning among nursing students. There were significant positive correlation between self-directed learning (r= 0.33) and its aspects including, self-management (r= 0.72), desire for learning (r= 0.58) and self-monitoring (r=0.52) with cultural intelligence and academic vitality (P<0.01). Conclusion: Selfdirected learning seems to be a phenomenon that is influenced by many factors such as cultural intelligence and academic vitality. Recommendations: this study suggests that academic vitality and culture intelligence should be considered together when self-directed learning is conducted to improve nursing students' academic performance. Workshops should be held in order to promote self-directed learning among students.

Lonjakan perubahan metode pembelajaran terjadi cukup signifikan pada pandemi Covid-19. Setelah masuknya Covid-19 di Indonesia, pemerintah mengeluarkan kebijakan untuk menghilangkan pembelajaran tatap muka sementara. Pandemi Covid-19 telah menciptakan tantangan berikutnya dalam pendidikan keperawatan. Mahasiswa keperawatan, dilarang berpartisipasi dalam kesempatan belajar tatap muka dan pengalaman klinis "langsung". Dunia pendidikan keperawatan meresponnya dengan melakukan proses pembelajaran online melalui elearning (pembelajaran elektronik) yang dikembangkan oleh perguruan tinggi masing-masing dan sumber belajar online lainnya yang tersedia di dunia maya. Untuk mengakomodasi mahasiswa keperawatan yang dalam bahaya tidak maju dalam studi akademis mereka dan untuk menyelesaikan gelar. Kajian pustaka bertujuan untuk mengetahui gambaran metode pembelajaran selama pandemi. Pencarian literatur menggunakan database pubMed dan google scholar dengan kata kunci: pembelajaran online dan pendidikan keperawatan. Hasilnya adalah 5 jurnal periode 2016-2019 yang memenuhi kriteria inklusi. Hasil dari 5 jurnal yang dilihat secara lengkap melalui studi pustaka ini diperoleh 5 jurnal. Kesimpulan dari tinjauan pustaka ini adalah bahwa inovasi dan pengembangan serta penerapan dalam proses pembelajaran merupakan lompatan yang signifikan dalam budaya pembelajaran online. Implementasi dari filosofi Merdeka Belajar - Kampus Merdeka.
