ÖzetAmaç:Anne sütü ve emzirme ile ilgili web sitelerinin tasarımının ve bu web sitelerinde yer alan eğitim materyallerinin okunabilirliğinin değerlendirilmesidir. Gereç ve yöntem: Tanımlayıcı bir araştırmadır. Ocak 2014' de Google arama motorunda "anne sütü" ve "emzirme" anahtar kelimeleri ile arama yapılmıştır. Toplam 24 site ve 235 eğitim materyali değerlendirmeye alınmıştır. Verilerin değerlendirmesinde sayı ve yüzde, okunabilirliğin değerlendirilmesinde ise SMOG, Flesch Okuma Kolaylığı ve Türkçe İçin Okunabilirlik Değeri kullanılmıştır. Bulgular:İncelenen sitelerin %66.6'sının okunurluk düzeyi orta güçlükte bulunmuştur. SMOG okunabilirlik formülü kullanılarak elde edilen skorun ortalamasının 12.61±1.02 ve puanların dağılımının 10.92-14.76 arasında olduğu bulunmuştur. Bu değerlere göre ilgili materyallerin 12. eğitim düzeyinde olduğu görülmektedir. Flesch Okuma Kolaylığı düzeyi 37.09±9.04 ve puan dağılımının 18.26-52.95 arasında, 13.-16. eğitim düzeyine sahip bireylerin anlayabileceği güçlükte olduğu saptanmıştır. Türkçe okunabilirlik değeri ise 9.74±1.69 ve puan dağılımının 6.90-13.02 arasında olup, 10. sınıf eğitim seviyesinde olduğu bulunmuştur. Sonuç: Web sitelerinin tasarımının okunurluk düzeyinin orta güçlükte olduğu, okunabilirlik formüllerine göre anne sütü ve emzirme ile ilgili web sitelerinin okunabilirliğinin önerilen altıncı sınıf eğitim düzeyinden oldukça yüksek olduğu bulunmuştur. AbstractPurpose: To evaluate designs of the websites about human milk and breastfeeding and the readability of the education material on these websites. Materials and methods:This is a descriptive study. The key words "breast milk" and "breastfeeding" were used to identify the relevant websites on Google in January 2014. A total of 24 websites and 235 pieces of education material were evaluated. Data were evaluated by using numbers and percentages and readability was evaluated with SMOG readability analysis (SMOG), Flesch Reading Ease and Readability Value for Turkish. Results: The readability degree was moderate in 66.6% of the websites examined. The mean score obtained by using SMOG readability formula was 12.61±1.02, ranging from 10.92 to 14.76, which shows that the education material examined was appropriate for the 12th grade. The mean score for Flesch Readability Ease was 37.09±9.04, ranging from 18.26 to 52.95, which indicates that the material was appropriate for 13th-16th grade. The mean Turkish readability score was 9.74±1.69, ranging from 6.90 and 13.02, which shows that the material was appropriate for the 10th graders. Conclusion: The websites about breastfeeding was found to be moderately difficult to read and according to the readability formulas, the readability of the websites was considerably higher than the recommended grade -6th grade.Pam Med J 2015;8(1):45-50

The Readability of Online Patient Education Materials from Major Anesthesiology Associations and the American Society of Anesthesiologists

Background: As much as 80% of US adults search online for health related information. The value of the information is limited by the patients' ability to comprehend it. Despite the recommendation by the American Medical Association (AMA) to provide all patient education materials (PEMs) at a 6 th grade reading level, many online sources do not conform. This study aims to evaluate the readability of PEMs from major online sources for anesthesiology. Methods: We determined the readability of PEMs from five major anesthesiology organizations and twelve brochures from the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) using ten validated readability scales. PEMs from the various anesthesiology websites were compiled into a single word document for analysis. The twelve patient education brochures from the ASA were downloaded and analyzed separately. We then grouped the twelve documents into one sample and compared it to the other anesthesiology association websites. Results: All of the PEMs provided by the ASA were determined to be higher than a 6 th grade reading level with nine being at a 12 th grade reading level or above. The PEMs of the five major anesthesiology association websites were beyond the 6 th grade reading level with four out of five at greater than the 12 th grade reading level. Conclusion: The results showed that the readability of PEMs provided by five major anesthesiology associations and the ASA was beyond the 6 th grade. Therefore, the PEMs with improved readability in anesthesiology are needed.
