Reactive Processes of Nickel Oxide on Oxidic Substrates as Observed by Scanning Force Microscopy

Abstract: High‐temperature diffusion/reaction processes of nickel oxide (NiO) have been studied on oxidic surfaces. Nickel was sputtered on silicon dioxide (SiO2, quartz) and on yttrium stabilized zircon dioxide (YSZ). The metallic films with layer‐thicknesses of 200 ‐ 800 nm possessing well‐defined steps and shapes, subsequently were annealed in air. On quartz, the thermal anneal at 500°C led to the formation of nickel olivine. Thermal anneal on YSZ at 500°C led to the formation of NiO. Further treatment at 1200°C caus… Show more

“…Transition metal oxides like nickel oxides have found wide applications due to these anti-ferromagnetic semiconductor with wide gab ≈ 3.6 eV and cubic rock saltlike crystal structure [1,2]. It offers promising candidature for many application such as electrocatalysis [3], positive electrode in batteries [4], fuel cell [5], electrochromic devices [6], solar thermal absorber [7], catalyst for oxygen evolution [8] and photo electrolysis [9].…”

“…The second result is that the alternative mechanism is not related to the changes in the microstructureneither on the position of the nuclei nor in between the nuclei. In particular, metal-induced crystallization [27] and formation of NiO [30] can be excluded by the experimental results. The applied thermal budget in the experiments of this article (225 °C, 3 min) are significantly lower than in the respective literature.…”

“…Researchers have shown considerable interest in Ni-Mo oxide films, because of their applications such as hydrogen evolution catalysis [1,2] and anticorrosion treatment [3]. Transition metal oxides, like nickel oxides have found application due to their anti-ferromagnetic semiconducting properties with a wide band gap of 3.6 eV [4,5]. This provides opportunities for use in electrochromic devices [6], fuel cells [7] or other applications.…”
