Reactive Black 5 dye degradation using filters of smuggled cigarette modified with Fe3+

Abstract: This study presents an attempt to solve two serious environmental problems: the generation of toxic effluents and solid waste disposal. The work proposes recycling cigarette filters with the purpose of degrading reactive dyes, which are used in the textile industry. Filters of smuggled cigarettes were recycled through Fe immobilization on their surface. The material obtained was characterized through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), scanning electron microsc… Show more

“…The peak at 3468 cm −1 is attributed to the ν(O-H) stretching vibrations of hydroxyl groups in CAc. Namely, the range of wavenumbers between 3500 cm −1 and 3400 cm −1 can be attributed to the OH stretching present on the cellulose surface [ 39 ]. It can be noted that the mentioned region is important because OH groups may give information about the formation of a hydrogen-bond matrix inside the actual structure since OH groups can form hydrogen bonds with not only C=O (see later) but also with other groups, as, for example, another OH group or –O– group [ 40 ].…”

“…The presence of RB5 dye in water affects the performance of biological processes due to its toxicity or intrusion in the capability of enzymes (Iglesias et al 2013;Glugoski et al 2017;Lumbaque et al 2017;Bilal et al 2018). Therefore, the initial dye amount possesses a substantial role in the e ciency of the dye elimination process.…”

“…A number of scientific efforts have been applied to eradicate these hazardous chemicals from wastewater. 2,3 Various physicochemical techniques such as filtration, 4 adsorption, 5 precipitation, 6 and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been reported. [7][8][9] AOPs are a set of chemical treatments designed to remove organic materials from wastewater by oxidation through reactions with reactive oxygen species.…”
