“…Although the peaks could not be assigned to specific epimers, virtually identical spectra were obtained for both compounds: 1 H-HMR analysis of these yielded spectra identical to that for γ-TQ, indicating rearrangement prior to or during analysis. The UV-vis spectra are similar to those previously reported for 8a-(hydroxy)-R-tocopherone (33,34), which readily arranges to R-tocopherylquinone. Because the 8a-substituted tocopherones readily undergo reduction by ascorbic acid to the corresponding tocopherols (28,29,33,34), we treated both products with ascorbic acid in sodium formate buffer (29).…”

“…Therefore, the Sa-hydroxy y-and 6-tocopherones may be attacked by ethanol as the solvent to give the ethoxy compounds. Sa-Hydroxy a-tocopherone has been previously reported to be involved in the free radical reaction of atocopherol 19 ) or the O 2 -reaction of a-tocopherol. 14 ) A good correlation was obtained between the formation rates of tocopherols from Sa-hydroperoxy tocopherones and the vitamin E activities of the corresponding tocopherols (Fig.…”

“…The same probably applies to vegetable oils rich in vitamin E or even vegetable gelatin capsules where at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute it was found that these food components significantly decrease the recovery of artemisinin, a strong oxidant, from the intestinal liquid phase, but not those of flavonoids [26,27]. The effect may eventually explain by the wellknown and strong reaction of vitamin E with peroxides [28]. The intraerythrocytic stages of P. falciparum have an active pathway for biosynthesis of vitamin E. Based on these findings, a new drug target for antimalarial could be developed [29].…”
