Reactions of 37CI (n, γ) 38CI in Binary Mixtures of Aliphatic Compounds

Abstract: The reactions of 3 * CI atoms, produced in a high flux nuclear reactor have been investigated in binary mixtures of CCI, with CH3CHJCHO, CH3COOCJH5, CH3COOH and CH3CH2COOH and of CHCI3 with CH 3 COCH 3 . The organic yields fall sharply as the concentration of the chlorinated compounds decrease except in the case of CC1 4 /CH 3 COOH. As in previous works, the results show that the variations of organic yields can be related to the sample compositions if specific reactions cross sections are ascribed to each … Show more

“…In mixtures of CCI4 with some other aliphatie Compounds e. g. alkanes [2,9] or propionaldehyde, ethyl acetate, aeetie and propionic acid [7] the plots of Yß -YImA versus Y, give a straight line for the whole ränge of Y. The question arises why all these plots give straight lines although the diffusion of Cl' atoms and perchloromethyl radicals must oecur.…”

“…In the case of the system chloroform-acetone [7] the reaction giving labelled organic Compounds by diffusion of radicals could not take place because the reaction Cl' with CHCI3 gives always HCl. Thus the total organic yield is due to reactions in the hot-zone and the graph of the plot of Yß -Y/mji is a straight line.…”
