Reaction of Vanadyl Ions with Alkyl Dinitriles

Abstract

New complexes were prepared from the reaction of vanadyl ion with malononitrile and succinonitrile. Both complexes were found to exhibit a decrease in C = N streatching frequency.The reaction of vanadyl ion with malononitrile ion gives a complex in which the C = N stretching frequency is increased. The increase or decrease is related to the type of bonding and to the difference in 7r-back bonding.
