SummaryVerticillianl dahliae causes potato (Solarium tuberosam) early dying disease. Interspecific hybrids containing S. tuberosunl, S. berthaaltii, S. bukasovii, S. chacoense, S. gourlayi, S. sparsipilum and S. tarijense were identifed with resistance to V. dahliae. Clones were grown in replicated trials for three years in a plot containing approximately 50 colony forming units (cfu) V. dahliae per g soil. Clones were evaluated for vine maturity, early dying symptoms and stem colonization. Five resistant 2x clones were identified with early maturity and low levels of stem colonization. A single maturity score and one disease score, each obtained in mid-August, were sufficient to distinguish among clones. An effective threshold level for considering a stem to be infected was determined to be 25 cfu/100 ial sap. Early dying symptoms did not correlate strongly with stem colonization. Numerous stems must be sampled when making resistance assessments. The average cfu/100 IJI sap correlated strongly with the number of infected stems.

Verticillium wilt (VW), caused mainly by the soil-borne fungus V. dahliae, is a persistent and serious problem in potato production. Host-plant resistance offers an attractive control strategy, but most major cultivars are susceptible to VW. Resistance to VW was evaluated in 14 advanced clones from U.S. potato breeding programs and 11 cultivars. The two objectives of this study were to 1) determine the extent to which VW resistance exists in advanced selections in U.S. potato breeding programs and 2) test a selection strategy based on multiple measures of resistance. The three measures of resistance used in this study were symptom expression in the field, colonization of stem sap, and numbers of propagules in senescent stems. Resistant clones had low scores, but susceptible clones were highly variable for all three measures. An effective selection strategy utilizing all three measures of assessment can be used to separate true resistance from tolerance as follows: first, identify clones with low symptom expression, then measure sap colonization, and finish by establishing propagule levels in senescent stems. Based on this approach, breeders will be able to identify VW resistant, and not just VW tolerant, germplasm for future breeding efforts.Resumen La marchites por Veticillium (VW), causada principalmente por el hongo del suelo V. dahliae, es un problema persistente y serio en la producción de papa. La resistencia de la planta hospedera es una estrategia de control atractiva, pero la mayoría de las variedades principales son susceptibles a VW. Se evaluó la resistencia a VW en 14 clones avanzados de programas de mejoramiento de papa de E.U. y 11 variedades. Los dos objetivos de este estudio fueron 1) determinar hasta que punto existe resistencia a VW en las selecciones avanzadas de programas de mejoramiento de papa de E.U. y 2) probar una estrategia de selección basada en múltiples medidas de resistencia. Las tres medidas de resistencia usadas en este estudio fueron la expresión de síntomas en el campo, colonización de la savia del tallo, y el número de propágulos en tallos senescentes. Los clones resistentes tuvieron registros bajos, pero los susceptibles fueron altamente variables para las tres medidas. Se puede emplear una estrategia de selección efectiva utilizando las tres medidas de evaluación para separar la verdadera resistencia de la tolerancia de la siguiente manera: primero, identificar clones con baja expresión de síntomas, después medir la colonización de la savia, y terminar con el establecimiento de los niveles de propágulos en tallos senescentes. Con base en este enfoque, los mejoradores estarán en capacidad para identificar germoplasma con resistencia a VW, y no solamente tolerancia, en esfuerzos de mejoramiento a futuro.

Ecological Relationships of Verticillium Wilt Suppression of Potato by Green Manures

Studies show that once a suppressive effect has been established, a green manure treatment for a single season is sufficient to either maintain or to re-establish the control of Verticillium wilt of potato. Verticillium wilt, caused by Verticillium dahliae Kleb., was controlled on the first years of Russet Burbank potato cropping following 2-3 successive years of green manure treatments. Following this control, yields were increased with the first year of potato cropping, but were reduced during the second consecutive year of cropping with potato. In the second year of continuous cropping with Russet Burbank, total yields were reduced by 10% and U.S. #1 tubers by 40%, and these yield reductions were accompanied by increased soil populations of V. dahliae by >5-fold. Yet, with a single season of an earlier-used green manure treatment (e.g. Austrian winter pea, sudangrass, Dwarf Essex rape, Bridger rape, oats, rye, or sweet corn), Verticillium wilt was again controlled and yields of Russet Burbank were increased to higher levels or to levels that were equivalent to those initially observed following either 2 or 3 successive seasons of green manure treatment. Green manures also demonstrated significant effects on microbial activities, which were inversely related to the incidence of Verticillium wilt. More specific effects on microbial activity and soilborne ecology were shown with increased populations of Fusarium spp. Verticillium wilt was negatively correlated with infections of potato feeder roots and stem-ends of potato tubers by F. equiseti. Exemplifying the effect of a green manure on fungal ecology, sudangrass treatments were shown to have lasting effects on Fusarium avenaceum populations with quantitative changes that extended 5 years beyond the time of soil incorporation with sudangrass.Resumen Los estudios demuestran que una vez que se ha establecido el efecto supresivo, es suficiente un tratamiento con abono verde por un ciclo de cultivo ya sea para mantener o re-establecer el control del marchitamiento por Verticillium en papa. El marchitamiento por verticillium, causado por Verticillium dahliae Kleb, fue controlado en los primeros años del cultivo de papa Russet Burbank siguiendo dos o tres años sucesivos de tratamientos con abono verde. Siguiendo este control, se aumentaron los rendimientos en el primer año del cultivo de la papa, pero se reducía durante el segundo año consecutivo de cultivo con papa.
