Reaction of poly(vinyl alcohol) with potassium persulfate and graft copolymerization

Abstract: A study of the oxidation of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVAL) by potassium persulfate (KPS) in aqueous solutions showed that the decomposition of KPS was greatly enhanced by the presence of PVAL, its hydroxyl groups being oxidized to ketones in a yield of about one mole of ketone from one mole of KPS. The decomposition rate of KPS was found to be given by the equation, −d[S2O82−]/dt = k[S2O82−] [PVAL]1/2, which was essentially the same as in the oxidation of alcohols of low molecular weight by persulfate ion. The occ… Show more

“…Graft copolymerization of vinyl monomers onto natural fibers have been studied using peroxydisulfate. [12][13][14][15] Agarwal and Sreenivasan 16,17 have studied graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA), acrylonitrile (AN), vinyl acetate (VA) and styrene onto jute fibers by gamma radiation. Mishra et al 18 grafted MMA onto chemically modified jute fibers.…”

“…Grafting has been initiated by hydrogen peroxide, persulfates, peroxides, redox catalysts, and also by light and ionizing radiation. [5] For example, graft copolymers of polyacrylonitrile and polyacrylamide on PVA have been synthesized by Mino and Kaizerman by redox initiation using ceric ammonium nitrate, [14] Methyl methacrylate has been graft polymerized onto PVA using potassium persulfate [14] and copper(II) chelate, [15] and a cerium(IV) system. [15,16] Ethyl acrylate, [17] styrene, [18] vinyl acetate, [19] and 4-vinylpyridine [20] have also been grafted onto PVA.…”

“…The increase in the initiator concentration increases the dissociation rate of initiator and therefore increases the free radical concentration in the polymerization medium. The free radicals participate in many reactions in the graft polymerization [21], which can directly interact with the CHA backbone to form active sites upon it. They may also initiate the homopolymerization of GMA.…”
