Reaction of monensin silver salt with methyl iodide: smooth alkylation of a tightly hydrogen-bonded carboxylate

Abstract: Despite its structural similarity to the sparingly reactive sodium salt of monensin, the silver salt of monensin was smoothly alkylated with methyl iodide on the carboxyl group to give the methyl ester of monensin.
