Reaction of carbon dioxide with a palladium–alkyl complex supported by a bis-NHC framework

Abstract: The reactivity of a dimethyl palladium complex supported by a dicarbene chelate (MDCMes)PdMe2 towards CO2 has been investigated. In the presence of trace H2O, this reaction yields the corresponding methyl bicarbonate complex (MDCMes)PdMe(O2COH), which goes on to give the corresponding κ2-carbonato complex upon crystallization (MDCMes)Pd(CO3). This chemistry, as well as related protonolysis by acetic acid was monitored by a combination of techniques including React-IR spectroscopy.

“…These bond lengths are in good agreement with those previously reported14 for the monomeric acetato palladium biscarbene complex 2 with Pd–C carbene bond lengths of 1.955(3) and 1.977(3) Å and Pd–O bond lengths of 2.069(2) and 2.077(3) Å.…”

“…We obtained single crystals by slow diffusion of diethyl ether into an acetonitrile solution of this solid. We were surprised to find that the data we obtained from the initial solution have not been in agreement with the monomeric complex 2 , recently published,14 but the structure of the unexpected silver containing, trinuclear complex 3· OAc – (Figure 1). We confirmed the presence of silver and the palladium:silver ratio by energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (EDX) of the previously measured single crystal, which showed a palladium:silver ratio of 2:1.…”

“…Rosenthal and co-workers investigated the reactivity of a dimethyl palladium complex supported by a dicarbene chelate, (MDC Mes )PdMe 2 (MDC Mes is a cis-dimethylpalladium complex supported by a methylene-bridged dicarbene ligand with ancillary mesityl groups), towards CO 2 , which was monitored by a combination of techniques including React-IR spectroscopy. [221] The research showed that this process did not run facilely. Instead, this compound behaved similarly to dimethyl palladium complexes supported by other chelating ligands and readily underwent protonolysis.…”

“…The decomposition of 3c in solution hampered the detection of the carbene signal in 13 C NMR spectroscopy. The complexes with the bulkier mesityl substituents, which have been used previously to ensure stability of palladium complexes bearing these ligands, 32,37,38 were stable in solution and resistant against air and moisture at room temperature for at least a week. In contrast to the findings of Riederer et al, 3 we did not observe a relation between stability and linker length.…”
