Reaction of AlR3 with [CPh3][B(C6F5)4]:  Facile Degradation of [B(C6F5)4]- by Transient “[AlR2]+

Abstract: Trimethylaluminum reacts with [CPh3][B(C6F5)4] at elevated temperatures to give a mixture of AlMe3-x(C6F5)x compounds, depending on the Al/B ratio. AlBui 3 reacts significantly faster under β-hydride abstraction. The Al−C6F5 species rapidly react with Cp2ZrMe2 or [Cp2ZrMe]+ under C6F5 transfer to give poorly active Cp2ZrMe(C6F5); this reaction may have implications for the deactivation of Cp2ZrMe2/AlR3/[CPh3][B(C6F5)4] olefin polymerization catalysts.

“…Young valve was heated at 60°C for 16 h. During that time, the phase separation disappeared and a pale-yellow solution was obtained. The NMR spectroscopic data are in accordance with the presence of two compounds, namely [(2,6-Dipp 2 C 6 H 3 )GaBu(C 6 F 5 )] (15) [34] and B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 . [14] + [CHB 11 Cl 11 ] -(11 mg, 12 µmol) in a 6:1 mixture of C 6 D 6 / C 6 D 5 Cl (0.6 mL) was treated with 1-octene (14 µmol, 2.4 µL) at room temperature.…”

“…These compounds were identified by 1 H and 19 F NMR spectroscopy, the latter by comparison with an authentic sample and published data [35] and the former by the similarity of its 19 F NMR signals with those of the related (pentafluorophenyl)aluminum species [Me n Al(C 6 F 5 ) 3-n ]. [34] On the other hand, no change of the NMR spectra of the carborane salt [14] + [CHB 11 Cl 11 ] -was observed after heating at 68-70°C for 23 h, thereby indicating a surprisingly high stability of this compound. The difficulty of obtaining pure samples of any of the new ionic compounds may be illustrated by the fact that repeated attempts to crystallize [13] + -anions separated by benzene molecules.…”
