Reaction Mechanism inF19(α, p)Ne22at 6 Mev

Abstract: Angular distributions of protons corresponding to the ground-state and first excited-state transitions in the reaction F 19 (a^Ne 22 have been measured for five bombarding energies in the region of 6.0 to 6.55 Mev. Angular correlations of the de-excitation gamma ray from the first excited state of Ne 22 with the alphaparticle and proton directions have been measured for six different combinations of bombarding energy and proton detection direction. Some, but not all, of the results show striking agreements wit… Show more

“…Fluctuating asymmetries about 90° are not a new effect; for example, such asymmetries have been observed [12][13][14] in the reaction 0 16 (^,«)N 14 , in which F 18 is again the compound nucleus, and in the reaction 15 F 19 (a,^)Ne 22 . At slightly lower excitation energies, where the level spacings are somewhat greater, Lee and Schiffer 16 have used the resonance behavior of the expansion coefficients to identify levels in C 15 , from a study of the reaction B n (a,p)C u .…”

“…The first excited state of Xe 132 has also been observed in Coulomb excitation studies. 3 A value of four has been measured for the ground-state spin of I 132 by Sherwood, Ovenshine, and Parker, 4 and by Lipworth, Garvin, and Nierenberg. 5 …”

“…2 They applied the method of "resonating group structure" 3 to build up a wave function for the nuclei, and assumed a purely central potential consistent with the binding energies of the deuteron and alpha particle. The possible ^+H 3 and D+E) groupings were not included in the wave function.…”
