A quantitative model, based on hadronic physics and Monte Carlo cascading, is described and applied to heavy ion collisions at BNL-AGS energies (∼ 14 GeV/u). The model was found to be in excellent agreement with particle spectra where data previously existed, for Si beams, and was able to successfully predict the spectra where data were initially absent, for Au beams. For Si + Au collisions, baryon densities of three or four times the normal nuclear matter density (ρ 0 ) are seen in the theory, whereas for Au + Au collisions, matter at densities up to 10 ρ 0 is anticipated. The possibility that unusual states of matter may be created by the Au beams and potential signatures for its observation are considered.

PMT overshoot study for the JUNO prototype detector

The quality of PMT signals is a key for large-size and high-precision neutrino experiments, while most of these experiments are affected by the overshoot of PMT signal from the positive HV-single cable scheme. Overshoot affects the trigger, dead time and charge measurement from a detector. For the JUNO prototype detector, we have performed a detailed study and calculation on PMT signal overshoot to control the ratio of overshoot to signal amplitude to ∼1%, with no effect on other PMT parameters.

Comparison on PMT waveform reconstructions with JUNO prototype

JUNO is a 20 kton underground liquid scintillator detector aiming to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and neutrino measurements. A prototype of JUNO is designed and set up for better understanding sub-systems of future detector. The preliminary results show that trigger rate is about 290 Hz at threshold 0.3MeV (gamma) on the surface of earth, containing cosmic muon rate ~35 Hz identified by detected energy higher than 20 MeV. For a better detector understanding with PMT signal, three waveform reconstruction algorithms are compared for PMTs with different overshoot ratios, including charge integration, waveform fitting, and deconvolution. It is concluded that the deconvolution algorithm is best to handle larger overshoot (~10%) while a selected time window length would affect the reconstruction uncertainty. Further, the three reconstruction algorithms show similar performance on consistency and uncertainty with small overshoot (~1%) waveforms and different amplitudes, which means that the simplest charge integral method is still working well for quick waveform reconstruction in this case.
