Alternative hosts are an important way of phytopathogenic bacteria survival between crop seasons, constituting a source of inoculum for the following crops. Bacterial wilt, caused by Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens (Cff), is one of the most important diseases for common bean, and little information is available about the host range of the bacterium. In this study, we assessed possible alternative hosts for Cff, especially those cultivated during winter, in rotation systems with common bean. Plants of barley, black oat, canola, radish, ryegrass, wheat and white oat, were assessed under field and greenhouse conditions. Cff colonized epiphytically all plant species and endophytically black oat, ryegrass, wheat and white oat plants assessed in the greenhouse assays. Under field conditions, Cff colonized all plant species by except radish. All bacterial strains re-isolated from the plants were pathogenic to common bean and identified as Cff by PCR with specific primers. Based on our results, the cultivation of bean crop in succession with barley, black oat, canola, ryegrass, wheat and white oat should not be recommended, mainly in areas with a history of bacterial wilt occurrence. In these cases, the better option for crop rotation during the winter is radish, a non-alternative host for Cff.

A produção comercial do sapotizeiro é feita por meio de mudas enxertadas, mas pomares com baixo custo de implantação e alta qualidade de plantas visando o mercado de frutas frescas podem se tornar uma opção para a agricultura familiar. Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo verificar a viabilidade de produção de mudas de sapotizeiro por meio da estaquia em diferentes substratos, sem a utilização de reguladores vegetais. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento estatístico inteiramente ao acaso, com 5 repetições, 4 tratamentos (substratos: areia média lavada, fibra de coco, casca de café carbonizada e Plantmax®) e 18 estacas por unidade experimental, totalizando 360 observações, colocadas para enraizar em bandejas de poliestireno expandido de 72 células. A escala de notas foi utilizada para avaliar a qualidade das mudas obtidas. Os dados obtidos foram analisados com auxílio do procedimento CATMOD do programa estatístico SAS (2003). O substrato fibra de coco foi o que possibilitou a formação das raízes de melhor qualidade.

Many bacterial plant pathogens have a broad host range important for their life cycle. Alternate hosts from plant families other than the main (primary) host support the survival and dissemination of the pathogen population even in absence of main host plants. Metabolic peculiarities of main and alternative host plants can affect genetic diversity within and between the pathogen populations isolated from those plants. Strains of Gram-positive bacterium Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens were identified as being causal agents of bacterial spot and wilt diseases on leguminous plants, and other crop and weed plants, collected in different regions of Russia. Their biochemical properties and susceptibility to copper compounds have been found to be relatively uniform. According to conventional PCR assays, all of the isolates studied were categorised as pathovar Curtobacterim flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens, a pathogen of legumes. However, the strains demonstrated a substantial diversity in terms of virulence on several tested host plants and different phylogenetic relationships were revealed by BOX-PCR and alanine synthase gene (alaS) sequencing.
