The renovation of the 2nd Van Brienenoord Bridge, planned in 2026‐2029, requires strengthening of the complete arch. Four thick steel strips were added on the web plates and assumed as stiffeners in the reduced cross‐sectional method. Investigation was done to verify if this is correct, as the new prEN1993‐1‐5 draft version classifies the strengthening strips as so called ‘weak’ longitudinal stiffeners.A FE model of an arch segment was made to undertake a geometrically and materially nonlinear analysis with imperfections included, also referred to as a ‘GMNIA’. The arch segment was loaded incrementally by applied displacements until the limit strain of the steel on a fiber, or the maximum reaction force, was reached. The results were compared against the EN1993‐1‐5 methodology. Considering realistic ULS load cases, the GMNIA showed that the sections have about 9% more capacity. This confirmed the assumptions and strengthening design for the arch.

The remaining life of steel bridges is often governed by fatigue cracking in the orthotropic steel deck (OSD). Since the design and construction of many of the steel bridges in Europe’s motorway system, the number and weight of the trucks they must carry has significantly increased. This has led to many bridges being deemed understrength, compared to contemporary design guidance, and experiencing local fatigue damage. This is a problem facing the Dutch national bridge authority, Rijkswaterstaat (RWS), and many other governments globally as decades old steel bridges need renewing, strengthening or sometimes, in the case of OSD, an inspection and repair program.Rotterdam’s Van Brienenoord bridge [1] is the busiest in the Netherlands, and renewing the twin- tied arch bridge requires a newly designed OSD. The key challenges were to sustainably extend the life of the bridge to its 100-year design life whilst minimising hindrance to traffic and maintaining the aesthetic of what is a national icon. Given the extreme sensitivity of fatigue calculations to stress magnitude, the aim of the work was to develop a state-of-the-art accurate method for predicting the design, or remaining, life of OSD. Traditional methods tend to underestimate fatigue demand.

Two steel tied arch bridges are a part of the Van Brienenoord Bridge (VBB}. They carry the A16 highway, a vital part infrastructure near the port of Rotterdam. The west arch has been suffering from fatigue in the orthotropic deck and the main load carrying structure required strengthening.A renovation outside traffic on a yard was proposed, benefiting achievable quality, H&S and hindrance. The main objectives where: maximizing remaining service life while re-using the maximum amount of existing steel. This was achieved by a combination of extensive analysis on describing locked-in stress, advanced FE analysis (GMNIA} and testing of existing material. After renovation the western VBB is able to withstand all design loads for another 100 years, while re- using 3200 ton of steel in the highest form. Arup and RHDHV work in a joint venture, the Managing Contractor, on the renovation of steel bridges for Rijkswaterstaat (Dutch highway authority}.
