Re-thinking the nature of day programs for people with dementia: Implications for research

Abstract: Day programs are commonly identified in dementia strategies as a solution for keeping people with dementia home for as long as possible. Limited research evidence is available to support these policy approaches, and much of what exists demonstrates equivocal results. While key day program researchers have called for improvements in methodological and theoretical efforts, we argue that basic assumptions concerning what a day program is, and how the effects of day programs should be studied, also require reconsi… Show more

“…Clearly, their family members’ support needs have often been acknowledged more than have their own in the development of services and research ( see e.g. Symonds-Brown et al ., 2021). This study adds to previous research showing that people with dementia in fact do have awareness of their present situation (Clare et al ., 2008) and understanding of the difficulties that most likely lie ahead of them (Hellström and Torres, 2016).…”

“…Furthermore, assumptions identified through Alvesson and Sandberg's typology of assumptions are then examined in relation to alternative theoretical stances and research approaches in the studies of health care organisations and management. Alvesson and Sandberg's work focuses on improving challenges within organisation and management studies, and their problematisation method has proven useful for reconsidering longstanding problems requiring innovation in health care (Ceci et al, 2018; Egan et al, 2016; Purkis & Ceci, 2014; Symonds‐Brown et al, 2019).…”

“…Despite these variations, day programs have unique characteristics that set them apart from other continuing care options. Day programs employ care staff and admit people with a certain level of support needs [29,32]. This distinguishes them from senior or community centres [33] and creative arts programs [34], which are open to independent older adults, do not employ care staff, and are organized more informally.…”
