An experimental framework for managing 5G and beyond networks through cloud‐native deployments and end‐to‐end monitoring is presented. The framework uses containerised network functions in a Kubernetes cluster across a multi‐domain network spanning cloud and edge hosts. End‐to‐end monitoring is demonstrated through Grafana dashboards that showcase both infrastructure resources and radio metrics in two scenarios involving UPF re‐selection and user mobility. As a third scenario, the authors demonstrate how a decision engine interacts with the experimental platform to perform zero‐touch containerised application relocation, highlighting the potential for enabling dynamic and intelligent management of 5G networks and beyond.

5G represents a revolutionary shift with respect to previous generations given its design centered on network softwarization. Within such a change of paradigm, cloud-native solutions are widely regarded as the future of vertical application development because of their enhanced flexibility and adaptability to complex and dynamic scenarios. In this context, we present an experimental framework with over-the-air transmissions that tackles two critical aspects for enhancing the lifecycle management of 5G and beyond networks: cloud-native deployments of 5G core network functions (NFs) and end-to-end monitoring. First, we deploy Open5GS and Prometheus-based monitoring as containerized network functions (CNFs) in a Kubernetes cluster spanning a multi-tier network with a multi-access edge computing (MEC) host. We then demonstrate the end-to-end monitoring system by showcasing via Grafana dashboards both infrastructure resources and radio metrics of two scenarios; one devoted to user plane function (UPF) re-selection and the other to user mobility.

5G system and beyond targets a gigantic number of emerging applications and services that will create an extra overhead on the network traffic. Moreover, these industrial verticals have aggressive, contentious, and conflicting requirements that make the network have an arduous mission for achieving the desired objectives. It is expected to get requirements with close to zero time latency, high data rate, and network reliability. Fortunately, a ray of hope comes shining the way of telecom providers with the new progress and achievements in machine learning, cloud computing, micro-services, and the ETSI Zerotouch network and Service Management (ZSM) era. For this reason there is a colossal impetus from industries and academia towards applying these techniques by creating a new concept called Cognitive Cloud Native environment that can cohabit and adapt according to the network and resource state, and perceived Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). In this paper, we pursue the aforementioned concept by providing a unified hierarchical closed-loop network and service management framework that can meet the desired objectives. Also, we have proposed a cloud-native simulator that accurately mimics cloud-native environments, and enables us to quickly evaluate new frameworks and ideas. The simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of our simulator for parroting the real testbeds in various metrics.
