‘Re-socialisation' in isolated spaces: A case study on the social organisation of Fangcang shelter hospital patients under extreme spatial conditions

Abstract: Fangcang shelter hospitals – erected by installing medical equipment in large public venues – played an essential role during the COVID-19 pandemic in China. “… 49–52 Previous studies in the contexts of SARS 53 and COVID-19 40 indicated that social isolation exacerbated the disease-associated mental distress in hospitalised patients. Our findings mirrored those of Li et al , 54 suggesting that, in contrast to single-room isolation, the shared space in the Fangcang hospital promoted peer interaction and support within the patient community, which mitigated the unintended negative mental health impacts of isolation. According to WHO, 55 health is defined as a state of physical, psychological and social well-being.…”

“…It shows that providing interaction spaces for social life can facilitate salutogenic environments in hospitals. Li et al (2022) and Forooraghi et al (2022) addressed that the spaces for families and others can reduce patients’ anxiety and affect meaningfulness. The strong positive impact of intelligibility on SOC suggests that using adequate signage and color lines to find departments easily while providing a home-like and familiar environment facilitates orientation in public spaces.…”

“…33 'Fang Cang' shelter hospitals, erected by installing medical equipment in large public venues, played an essential role during the COVID-19 pandemic in China. 34 At the social and public management level, it is important to recognise that residents of informal settlements are individuals and not just numbers in case statistics. Management measures that can be taken to protect these residents and urban citizens include the establishment of emergency planning committees in informal settlements, deployment of community health workers, provision of financial and in-kind grants and implementation of solid waste collection strategies, which all contribute to the longterm well-being of the poor.…”
