“…In writing our research statements, we found it helpful to “read one, write one”—that is, read successful research proposals available from our department—familiarizing ourselves with routine ways of phrasing or organizing them. We also read several other dissertations to get a sense of how other graduate students framed and designed their projects (Fairbairn 2015; Hampton 2016; Kelly 2012; Nichols 2011; Rudrum 2014)—for example, by aligning one's research questions with one's research design, breaking one's methods into phases or engaging multiple methods to highlight the diverse ways that social relations manifest. Orienting to others’ work was useful, as one challenge with proposal writing was expressing the particularities of our engaged, feminist projects compared to other research approaches.…”
