Re‐imagining supply chain challenges through critical engaged research

Abstract: In this manuscript, we explore how engaged research can support the development of the theory and practice of supply chain management (SCM) and present critical engaged research as an extended form of engaged research. The article's main purpose is to examine more closely the relationship between critical engaged research and the process of theorizing. This essay presents an expanded model of knowledge production for the field of SCM and explores the opportunities for the production and co-production of new kn… Show more

“…This type of research is best described as “engaged scholarship” ( Touboulic et al, 2020 ), which seeks to cross the chasm between theory and practice. A critical requirement in this case is reflexivity, which requires consider of a multiplicity of perspectives as well as past and future actions and may often create some tension.…”

“…The above-described theoretical approach logically entails a research methodology grounded in a qualitative engagement with stakeholders cocreating research material "as to provide an opportunity to analyze supply chain phenomena in the context within which they are constructed" (Touboulic et al, 2020).…”

“…It capitalizes on the messiness and cross‐disciplinary nature of real‐world problems, rather than attempting to reduce them to manageable constructs and relationships. Anne Touboulic, Lucy McCarthy, and Lee Matthews illustrate the use of critical engaged research to develop supply chain theory in “Re‐Imagining Supply Chain Challenges Through Critical Engaged Research (Touboulic et al, 2020). ” This approach builds on engagement with research participants in order to avoid theoretical thinking constrained by assumptions.…”
