“…These findings give insight to understanding the relationship between sports participation and substance use, but most quantitative studies assessing the relationship between sports participation and substance use overlook the vast array of different sporting contexts that can produce divergent experiences and outcomes. Only recently have quantitative studies began to analyze social and health related outcomes among participants and the type of sport they play (Denham, 2011; Ford, 2007; Kreager, 2007; Sokol-Katz et al, 2006) For instance, Denham (2011) found that adolescents who participated in baseball, football, and weightlifting had higher levels of alcohol consumption when compared to their peers.
