“…Critically ill patients often have diminished cognitive awareness related to their severity of illness or need for sedation. Although there are numerous possible causes of loose or liquid stool in hospitalized patients, Thorson and coinvestigators 35 determined that greater severity of illness, administration of sorbitol-containing medication, and tube feeding are independent risk factors for noninfectious diarrhea. Data about the administration of sorbitol-containing medications were not collected in this study, but 87% of patients were tube-fed.…”

“…The length of time on ETF was the variable under study. We considered as possible confounders those variables associated with diarrhoea in the univariate analysis with P ≤ 0.100 . A backward procedure was followed as the modelling strategy.…”

“…Some studies have associated ETF with the development of diarrhoea in hospitalised patients, and longer ETF administration seems to be related to an increase in such risk . Studies analysing the temporal cut‐off point in the administration of ETF at which the risk of diarrhoea increases are scarce, and the risk associated with various lengths of ETF administration has never been compared with the risk associated with patients who do not undergo ETF.…”
