Re-Evaluation of the Taxonomy of Talaromyces minioluteus

Abstract: Talaromyces minioluteus belongs to the section Trachyspermi, has a worldwide distribution and has been found on various substrates, especially on various (stored) food commodities and indoor environments. This species is phenotypically and phylogenetically closely related to T. chongqingensis and T. minnesotensis. The phylogenetic and morphological analyses of 37 strains previously identified as T. chongqingensis, T. minnesotensis and T. minioluteus revealed that this clade incudes eight species: the accepted … Show more

“…Talaromyces mellisjaponici has been isolated from honey, despite previous studies suggesting that species in section Trachyspermi are mainly found in soil and living or decayed plants [7–11]. Only six Talaromyces species have been reported in honey, including T. scorteus from section Islandici , T. brasiliensis , T. affinitatimellis and T. basipetosporus from section Trachyspermi , T. brunneosporus from section Purpurei , and T. funiculosus from section Talaromyces [14, 15, 34].…”

“…The species diversity of filamentous fungi in honey in Japan was investigated, and five undescribed strains of Talaromyces section Trachyspermi were isolated. Most section Trachyspermi species are found in various materials, such as soil and plant debris [7][8][9][10][11]. Some species are isolated from substrates with low water activity, such as house dust and leather [12,13].…”

“…Although in Italy is believed a minor species, P. citrinum (synonymized with P. implicatum) is spread in Slovak Republic [51] and Pakistan [53]; being widespread and a citrinin producer [54], its presence is relevant; indeed, citrinin is a nephrotoxic mycotoxin [55,56]. According to most up-date literature, other Penicillium species involved as postharvest pathogens of pomegranate fruit are P. expansum, P. sclerotiorum, and P. minioluteum, the last being synonymized with Talaromyces minioluteus and re-arranged in T. minioluteus-complex, that includes eight species [57].…”

“…A total of 171 species were compiled in the genus and listed in the latest monograph [3]. Furthermore, 26 new taxa were afterwards noted [1,[4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. Twenty of them are from Asia: T. albisclerotius B.D.…”
