Re-evaluation of the 1836 “Hayward fault” and the 1838 San Andreas fault earthquakes

Abstract: Current seismic hazard models include two major earthquakes (M ∼ 7) in the San Francisco Bay area that are close in space and time: an 1836 event on the northern Hayward fault and an 1838 event on the peninsula section of the San Andreas fault. Analysis and interpretation of the available historical accounts indicate that the 1836 event occurred east of Monterey Bay, far from the Hayward fault, and was of M ∼ 6¼. Also, the 1838 event was not confined to the 60-km peninsula San Andreas as current models indicat… Show more

“…That fault segment is just to the northwest of the 1868 rupture zone (Figure 1). It may not have ruptured since 1776 and not in 1836 as some proposed [18]. None of the events since 1989 along the northwestern Hayward were larger than magnitude 4.6.…”

“…Otros autores (Evernden et al, 1981;Toppozada et al, 1988) han reevaluado las observaciones del terremoto de San Francisco del año 1906 para obtener el incremento de intensidad macrosísmica en función de la edad de las formaciones geológicas superficiales. En la tabla 2.2 se muestra el incremento de intensidad según la edad de los materiales superficiales.…”
