This paper presents a detailed review on free piston Stirling engines (FPSEs) technology. Generally, the Stirling engines can be categorized into two broad classes comprising kinematic and dynamic converters among which FPSEs are known as the dynamic type. Other well-known dynamic Stirling converters are Fluidyne and thermosacoustic engines among which the thermosacoustic ones are the most advanced Stirling converters recently presented. In this research, the dynamic Stirling engines are first introduced and reviewed. Then, the review work is directed toward the FPSEs, one of the most reliable dynamic Stirling converters utilized in different applications such as combined heat and power systems (CHPs). Subsequently, the working principles of different types of FPSEs and their performance are summarized. Next, several manufactured FPSEs, as well as their corresponding features and applications, are discussed. Finally, the article is conducted to analysis and modeling approaches of FPSEs.Accordingly, linear and nonlinear analytical techniques of FPSEs are introduced, and some comparative data are provided to verify the modeling schemes. Then, various design parameters affecting the engine performance are introduced and studied. The outcomes of this review work demonstrate the potential of FPSEs for different applications and reveal that the perturbation-based model is likely the most comprehensive nonlinear method for modeling and design of the FPSEs.

AbstractThe study of free piston Stirling engine (FPSE) requires both accurate thermodynamic and dynamic modelling to predict its performances. The steady state behaviour of the engine partly relies on non linear dissipative phenomena such as pressure drop loss within heat exchangers which is dependant on the temperature within the associated components. An analytical thermodynamic model which encompasses the effectiveness and the flaws of the heat exchangers and the regenerator has been previously developed and validated. A semi-analytical dynamic model of FPSE is developed and presented in this paper. The thermodynamic model is used to define the thermal variables that are used in the dynamic model which evaluates the kinematic results. Thus, a coupled iterative strategy has been used to perform a global simulation. The global modelling approach has been validated using the experimental data available from the NASA RE-1000 Stirling engine prototype. The resulting coupled thermodynamic-dynamic model using a standardized description of the engine allows efficient and realistic preliminary design of FPSE. Keywords

This study presents a thermodynamic–dynamic model of a free‐piston Stirling engine (FPSE) with nonlinear coefficients of spring, load damping, and pressure for working spaces. The effects of the nonlinear coefficients of hardening and softening springs on the movement and operating frequency of a displacer and piston are investigated. Subsequently, the influences of the nonlinear pressure terms of the working space and buffer spaces, as well as the nonlinear coefficients of the load on the amplitudes of the two pistons, frequency, and output powers are discussed. The results indicate that the low nonlinear coefficients of the spring have a minor effect on the amplitudes and frequency. As the high nonlinear coefficients of the hardening spring increase, the amplitudes and output power decrease, while the frequency increases. As the nonlinear terms of the softening spring increase, the amplitudes and output power reach maximum values, but the frequency is reduced by 3.55%. The effects of the nonlinear pressure terms on the amplitudes and output power are not evident. However, an increase in the nonlinear load leads to a significant decrease in the FPSE's performance.
