Rayleigh scattering measurements of several fluorocarbon gases

Abstract: Integrating nephelometers are commonly used to monitor airborne particulate matter. However, they must be calibrated prior to use. The Rayleigh scattering coefficients (b(RS), Mm(-1)), scattering cross sections (σ(RS), cm(2)), and Rayleigh multipliers for tetrafluoromethane (R-14), sulfur hexafluoride, pentafluoroethane (HFC-125), hexafluoropropene (HFC-216), 1,1,1,2,3,3,3,-heptafluoropropane (HFC-227ea), and octafluorocyclobutane (C-318) are reported from measurements made using a Radiance Research M903 integ… Show more

“…Flame shapes and colors are also documented by taking photographs with a DSLR camera (Kodak professional DCS 620) equipped with a Nikkor lens (AF 28/2.8D). [43]; C 2 HF 5 [44] and He [45]. An uncertainty analysis was performed, consisting of calculation of individual uncertainty components and their root mean square summation.…”

“…Measurements of aerosol scattering, extinction, and absorption coefficients (b scat , b ext , b abs ; Mm −1 ) were carried out using the aerosol albedometer as described in previous literature (Thompson et al, 2008;Dial et al, 2010;Redmond et al, 2011;Ma et al, 2012). Scattering calibration occurred against R-134a (Zadoo and Thompson, 2011) This encourages a conservative estimate of MAC increase at high RH.…”

“…0.9 atm. Instrument calibration was accomplished using filtered air and either SF 6 or R-134a, gases with Rayleigh multipliers of 6.60 and 7.25 times that of air, respectively [23,24]. Figure 2 shows the Mie model correction factors (C) as a function of particle size parameter (α) for particles with differing refractive indices assuming the homogeneous fill case illustrated in Figure 1(b).…”
