Ray-tracing critical-angle transmission gratings for the X-ray Surveyor and Explorer-size missions

Abstract: We study a critical angle transmission (CAT) grating spectrograph that delivers a spectral resolution significantly above any X-ray spectrograph ever flown. This new technology will allow us to resolve kinematic components in absorption and emission lines of galactic and extragalactic matter down to unprecedented dispersion levels. We perform ray-trace simulations to characterize the performance of the spectrograph in the context of an X-ray Surveyor or Arcus like layout (two mission concepts currently under s… Show more

“…For future XGS instruments high collecting area (> 1000 cm 2 ) and high resolving power (R = λ/∆λ > 3000) need to go hand in hand -one is of limited use without the other. An XGS based on CAT gratings 2 can provide R > 10,000 for even better resolution of kinematically broadened lines, which has now been shown through ray-tracing of Arcus and X-ray Surveyor-type mission concepts, 10 and through experimental demonstrations described below.…”

“…Using SPO-like performance with modules that populate a 30 degree azimuthal wedge we find efficiency-weighted resolving power above 10,000, with relaxed alignment tolerances. 10 Further studies will investigate more detailed layouts and potential trade-offs between effective area and resolving power to maximize the figures of merit for the Arcus science case.…”

“…However, XGS optical designs are neither free from aberrations, nor will a real XGS follow its design perfectly. We have undertaken numerous ray-trace studies of transmission XGS designs to understand the limits of performance, alignment tolerances, and other imperfections [18,19,[27][28][29][30], and came to the conclusion that instruments with R XGS ∼ 10000 and effective area > 1000 cm 2 should be feasible in the very near future.…”

“…The alignment sensitivities were derived using the methods described in [24]. The tightest tolerances are the 12.5 micron relative lateral translations of the SPO modules.…”
