Abstract:La María and Cerro Tres Tetas archaeological localities are located in the Central Plateau, in the province of Santa Cruz, Argentine Patagonia. This area presents abundant lithic raw materials of very good quality for knapping including flint, chalcedony and silicified wood. These raw materials were used by the inhabitants of the region since the end of the Pleistocene until recent historical times. Besides, we have recorded the exploitation of exotic stones in low proportions at the archaeological sites. Among these, the most abundant is obsidian which probably comes from sources located more than 125 km away. In this context, the use of this type of raw material should be evaluated in terms of social and symbolic issues.In this paper, we examine the strategies of acquisition and reduction of the obsidian found at the archaeological sites Cerro Tres Tetas 1, Casa del Minero 1, Cueva de La Ventana, La Mesada and Cueva Túnel. We carry out a technomorphological analysis of the obsidian remains from these sites.Results from this work strengthen the idea that the groups which lived in the Central Plateau knew about and exploited an obsidian source known as Pampa del Asador. A raise in the use of this raw material throughout time is recorded, reaching its peak in the late Holocene. We identified two different moments in the exploitation of obsidian at the regional level. During the final Pleistocene and early Holocene, obsidian would not have played a relevant role in the organization of technology. Production sequences indicate that tools probably were entered to the sites already manufactured. During the middle and late Holocene nodules and cores could have been brought into the sites. The strategies involved in their reduction are in broad terms similar to those implemented with local raw materials; there is no evidence that obsidian had more value in any way. On the other hand, it is also not possible to state that there was just an eventual exploitation of this raw material. We believe that obsidian was acquired during mobility circuits which enabled the contact between different groups.

El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar los nuevos resultados obtenidos en torno a las ocupaciones tempranas en el sitio La Gruta 1, área de La Gruta, extremo sur del Macizo del Deseado, Patagonia argentina. Éstos se refieren tanto a la transición Pleistoceno-Holoceno como al Holoceno temprano y abarcan aspectos paleoambientales, nuevos fechados radiocarbónicos, además de la disponibilidad y utilización de materias primas. Se presentan los resultados de los nuevos análisis polínicos, realizados en un mallín del área ubicado en la meseta central, cerca de la localidad arqueológica Viuda Quenzana, con una edad basal de ca. 12.500 años A.P. (14.500 cal AP). Por otra parte, a partir de los resultados obtenidos se infiere una vegetación similar a la reconstruida por otros registros polínicos del área que sugieren condiciones húmedas durante el segundo período de ocupación humana del sitio arqueológico La Gruta 1, comprendido entre ca. 11.000 y 8000 cal AP Las evidencias procedentes de la ampliación de las excavaciones en este sitio muestran la falta de continuidad entre los fechados correspondientes a la transición Pleistoceno-Holoceno y los del Holoceno temprano. En ambos períodos existe evidencia de transporte de materias primas desde otros espacios, que incluyen artefactos bifaciales, lo que es consistente con la información obtenida previamente.

Primary questions regarding the foraging behaviour of the first hunter–gatherers who colonized the New World are how they found, procured and utilized high‐quality raw materials for manufacturing stone tools. In this paper, we present evidence from the late Pleistocene site of Cueva Bautista in the highlands of south‐western Bolivia, which demonstrates that a substantial portion of the recovered stone tool assemblage originated in Cerro Kaskio, a recently discovered obsidian source located 15 km south‐west of the site. In addition to describing the geological and geochronological setting, we provide the first geochemical characterization of the Cerro Kaskio source by means of instrumental neutron activation analysis and energy‐dispersive X‐ray fluorescence. Supported on the technological analysis and archaeometric sourcing of the obsidian lithics found in Cueva Bautista, we discuss the nature of the procurement strategies practised by the earliest mobile hunter–gatherers who explored and colonized the Andean highlands. We conclude that opportunistic lithic resource procurement was probably an important component of the first foraging societies that explored the highland Andes.
