Raw diets for dogs and cats: a review, with particular reference to microbiological hazards

Abstract: There is a recent trend to feed pet dogs and cats in Britain and other developed countries on raw meat and animal by‐products using either commercial preparations or home recipes. This shift from heat‐treated processed food has been driven by perceived health benefits to pets and a suspicion of industrially produced pet food. The diets of wild‐living related species have been used as a rationale for raw feeding, but differences in biology and lifestyle impose limitations on such comparisons. Formal evidence do… Show more

“…The feeding of raw meat diets to dogs is controversial for a number reasons, one of which is the potential transmission of infectious pathogens to humans (18)(19)(20)(21). All of the facility guidelines specify that animals being fed raw meat diets and treats should be excluded from participating in AAIs, but only 13% of the Group 2 organizations surveyed reported this as a restriction-somewhat fewer than the 19% reported previously by Linder et al (11)-and only one of the Group 1 organizations did so.…”

“…Pet owners can prepare raw meat food themselves or can purchase ready-to-feed commercial products. The advantages of raw food include better palatability, digestibility, health benefits, and its natural origin; however, there is no substantial evidence to prove these claims [ 2 , 4 , 5 ]. Freezing is a process that reduces the product temperature to below 0°C, leading to the water inside the raw meat to form ice.…”
