Rauchen prädisponiert zum Peritonsillarabszess

Abstract: Smoking could be an important predisposing factor for the development of peritonsillar abscess e. g. due to alteration of the mucosa and microbiological changes. We could not identify a statistical relation between smoking and the risk of a postoperative haemorrhage after tonsillectomy à chaud.

“…No patient of our patient population had presented with a bilateral PTA, while others reported rates ranging between 0.8 and 4.9 % [27,30,[32][33][34]. In accordance with most studies [6,[35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43] smoking habits were overrepresented (43.8 %) in our patient population. In contrast to other studies, none of our patients had presented with a concomitant infectious mononucleosis [11,[44][45][46] or Kawasaki's disease [37,[44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52].…”

“…[23] Smoking appears to be a risk factor for PTAs. [24,25] However, our study revealed no strong correlation between PTA volume and patients' smoking status, drinking status, or dental problems. Only their treatment experience at local clinics was strongly correlated with PTA volume.…”

“…Isolation of the Necropsobacter genus in humans has been reported in clinical case studies related to bacteremia and abscesses [ 103 ], whereas Actinobacillus has been reported in the pathogenesis of periodontitis [ 104 ]. Interestingly, smoking has been linked to abscesses and periodontitis [ 105 , 106 ], suggesting that both Necropsobacter and Actinobacillus may have a role in the development of smoking-related abscesses.…”
