Rationale and Protocol for a Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial of a Cognitive Prescription Intervention for Reducing Dementia Risk Factors Among African Americans

Abstract: Background and Purpose: African Americans (AAs) are twice as likely to develop dementia than Whites, which may be driven by poorer dementia knowledge and lifestyle factors. This article provides the rationale and protocol for a pilot clinical trial examining a tailored multidomain lifestyle modification intervention in middle-aged and older AAs. This study will explore the feasibility and efficacy of individualized cognitive prescriptions (CogRx) which target five domains: physical activity, cognitive activity… Show more

“…From this perspective, participants change their responses to manage the impression caused or through self-deception (to feel good about themselves), especially when researchers interact with survey participants ( 26 ) . In contrast, the hybrid data collection presented here has been frequently used in the current epidemiological context ( 28 ) , and it brings potential benefits while helping to minimize the risk of social desirability bias.…”

“…Due to COVID-19 social distancing guidelines, older adults reported beneficial effects of social groups using the technology Zoom ( O’Connell, 2022 ). Fazeli et al (2022) report a community-based intervention to prevent cognitive decline that includes social activity and cognitive activity such as reading and taking classes. Reading is an activity that is cognitively stimulating and has been correlated with fewer neuropathological changes in the brain with aging ( Wilson et al, 2013 ).…”
