Rationale and design of a Scale-Up Project Evaluating Responsiveness to Home Exercise And Lifestyle Tele-Health (SUPER-HEALTH) in people with physical/mobility disabilities: a type 1 hybrid design effectiveness trial

Abstract: IntroductionRates of physical inactivity among people with physical disabilities are substantially higher than in the general population and access to home-based tailored exercise programmes is almost non-existent. Using a theory-driven eHealth platform, an innovative exercise programme referred to as movement-to-music (M2M) will be delivered as a customised, home-based exercise intervention for adults with mobility disabilities. Methods and analysisParticipants are being recruited for this type 1 hybrid design… Show more

“…Motivational strategies will include positive verbal encouragement to bolster exercise confidence (ie, self-efficacy) and performing the exercises with the participant to enhance learning through observation (ie, vicarious learning). These strategies are informed by social cognitive theory [ 88 ], and the research team has used these strategies in other trials [ 55 , 83 , 86 , 89 ]. To monitor exercise intensity, the telecoach will ask participants how hard they are working after every change in song (~5 minutes) throughout the session.…”

“…Mindfulness classes are taught once per week for 1 hour by a trained mindfulness instructor and are based on the core elements of mindfulness, including positioning (adapted for wheelchair users), focusing on the breath, and reducing unwanted thought patterns. Exercise classes are offered 2 days per week for 1 hour each class by trained instructors and include movement-to-music ( 28 ), complementary alternative medicine (yoga, Pilates, dual-tasking exercises) ( 29 ), and general fitness classes. Each class includes adaptations tailored to a participant’s functional level.…”

“…Participants signed up for an 8-week, 40-hour program (5 h/wk) that delivers online classes on evidence-based wellness practices (ie, health promotion) designed to support participants in improving their health (27). The core wellness domains are mindfulness, exercise, and nutrition.…”

“…A few of these barriers include accessibility of facilities, opportunity for activity, and aesthetic or environmental attributes [6]. In order to overcome these barriers, people with physical disabilities must be given more options for home-based activity, thus eliminating many well-known community-based barriers [7,8].…”

“…The SUPER-HEALTH project, which stands for Scale-Up Project Evaluating Responsiveness to Home Exercise And Lifestyle Tele-Health, is an ongoing 48-week exercise trial assessing the utilization of a movement-to-music (M2M) intervention remotely delivered to various disability groups [8]. SUPER-HEALTH recruits individuals with a mobility impairment, defined as the inability to walk or difficulty walking as a means to exercise, and includes people with spinal cord injury (SCI), spina bifida (SB), multiple sclerosis (MS), stroke, limb loss, and other disabilities and chronic health conditions.…”
