Rational design of high-yield and superior-quality rice

Abstract: Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a staple food for more than half of the world's population. To meet the ever-increasing demand for food, because of population growth and improved living standards, world rice production needs to double by 2030. The development of new elite rice varieties with high yield and superior quality is challenging for traditional breeding approaches, and new strategies need to be developed. Here, we report the successful development of new elite varieties by pyramiding major genes that signif… Show more

“…The super cultivar 93‐11 is a typical Indica variety and has been widely used in rice production because of its excellent appearance quality and moderately high yield (Zeng et al ). Nevertheless, it accumulated relatively higher level of Cd in grains (753 ± 124 µg/kg) in comparison with PA64s variety (327 ± 62 µg/kg), which is an Indica ‐like variety with maternal origin of Japonica , when the two cultivars were grown in a paddy field in Zhejiang province.…”

“…The more QTLs of agronomic traits that are identified, the more they promote breeding by MAS. Recently, Chinese scientists have reported the successful development of new elite varieties in rice by pyramiding major genes that significantly contribute to grain quality and yield from three parents over 5 years, and demonstrated that rational design is a powerful strategy for meeting the challenges of future crop breeding [58]. In foxtail millet, QTLs controlling agronomic traits have been detected in previous studies [16, 22, 23, 30].…”

“…In addition, it has been proposed that rice will be one of the main calorie supplies in the forthcoming years (FAO Rice Market Monitor 2016). Thus, there are efforts worldwide to accelerate the development of new rice varieties either to attain higher yielding rates and/or to obtain higher quality grains (Guimaraes 2009;Khush 2005;Moon et al 2003;Peng et al 2008;Zeng et al 2017). Despite the efforts made, rice breeders' seed suffer recurrent deteriorations due to successive annual cultivation (IRRI 1988;Serrat et al 2014).…”
