Rational design and SERS properties of side-by-side, end-to-end and end-to-side assemblies of Au nanorods

Abstract: By taking advantage of the anisotropy of AuNRs, we design different bifunctional PEG molecules to selectively bind to either the end or side face and simultaneously protect other faces of individual AuNRs. In this way, we successfully achieve orientation-controllable assemblies of AuNRs into side-by-side (SS), end-to-end (EE) and end-to-side (ES) orientations based on the electrostatic interaction between carboxylic PEG and CTAB capping on AuNRs. Furthermore, we find that the different orientations of assemble… Show more

“…Previously reported works use AuNRs with small organic ligands or polymers attached on their surface with a sulfur bonding, and exploit, either the solvent selectivity, or the site-specifi c interaction of the ligands stabilizing the NRs to achieve their self-assembling. [ 5,6 ] Besides, there is also an increasing interest for the NP welding. This interest is driven by both the fundamental aspect of the phenomena leading to the welding of nano-objects [ 7,8 ] and the potential application of the nanoscale welding to the bottom-up fabrication.…”

“…Treating the tip region of the NRs with charged thiol molecules can enable the preparation tip-assembled superstructures via electrostatic interactions. 21 In this work the self-assembly of region-selectively surface modified patchy gold nanorods and spherical gold nanoparticles is investigated. A robust two-step surface modification procedure was applied to prepare patchy gold nanorods with spatially inhomogeneous surface-ligands.…”

“…Only more recently with the progress in nanoscience has it become an active subject matter of SERS investigation. 4,8,[21][22][23] When it comes to one-dimensional (1D) metal oxide nanomaterials which typically exhibit a higher aspect ratio than noble metal nanorods of a comparable diameter, concerted SERS measurements on controlled nanomaterial substrates are even scarcer. Yet, the anisotropy of 1D nanomaterials can provide a higher degree of enhancement in localized electromagnetic fields through symmetry breaking and can thus be extremely beneficial for SERS.…”

“…3,12 The threedimensional finite difference time domain (3D-FDTD) theory, calculating local electromagnetic fields of transition metal surfaces when compared to the free electron metals, has effectively explained the experimentally observed phenomena. 3,12,22,29 The increased electromagnetic fields of non-spherical particles are often referred to as the lighting rod effect near structures of high curvature on a surface. The large anisotropy of the ITO NRs (with an aspect ratio larger 1:375 (width:length)) used in our SERS measurements may intensify this effect even further, leading to higher SERS activity than their isotropic zero-dimensional counterparts and the two dimensional ITO thin films.…”
