Rate Processes Related to the Hydrated Nickel Hydroxide Electrode in Alkaline Solutions

Abstract: The potentiodynamic response of the Ni/alkaline aqueous solution interface in the region of the hydrated normalNifalse(OH)2 to β‐normalNiOOH electrochemical reaction reveals that both species undergo phase transformations. The anodic product from the normalNifalse(OH)2 species involves the formation of three species energetically different which are detected during the electroreduction process. Under well‐defined perturbation conditions, a reasonable set of kinetic parameters pertaining to the anodic pro… Show more

“…It is clear that oxidation occurred in two regions of potential. The first region corresponds to that, where Ni(III) species begins to produce [5,[19][20][21]. It is noted that the Ni(OH) 2 /NiOOH transformation occurred on nickel electrode reversibly.…”

“…The peak A1 has been partially attributed to the oxidation of Ni to Ni(II) 23,24,[55][56][57] and also partially attributed to the oxidation of hydrogen that absorbed in the sample during cathodic reduction prior to the cyclic voltammetry experiment. 17,[58][59][60] Some researchers proposed that the oxidation reactions produce both NiO and Ni(OH) 2 as follows: 17,21,61 Ni…”

“…Peaks C1 and C2 were attributed to the reduction of two polymorphs, β-and γ-NiOOH, to Ni(OH) 2 . 2,61,70 In the heavy water solution, the absence of the peak C2 might indicate only one type of NiOOD formed during the cyclic voltammetry experiment; alternatively, the two polymorphs of NiOOD might have similar reduction potentials that cause the overlapping of the two peaks C1 and C2 in the voltammograms.…”

“…It is well known that the formation of γ-NiOOH phase is associated with swelling of the nickel film and consequently, micro cracks and disintegrates may be formed. Therefore, β-NiOOH phase is expected to be a better electro active material for high electrochemical performance in alkaline solution [46]. There is also a possibility of preferential formation of β-NiOOH at the GCO X but not on GC.…”
