Rate of posterior capsule opacification in eyes with the Akreos intraocular lens

Abstract: All patients had stable visual acuity with low rates of PCO 2.5 years after surgery. The PCO rate with the Akreos IOL was similar to that with other acrylic IOLs reported in the literature.

“…The incidence was 35% after 1 year of follow-up, which is moderate to high compared with percentages reported for other types of IOLs 23 and for previous models of the Akreos IOL. 24 There were no severe complications in our study.…”

“…The PCO rate with these hydrophilic IOLs, which have an improved 360-degree sharp edge, is reportedly lower than with older hydrophilic models that had a sharp optic edge design except at the optic-haptic junction. [28][29][30] Studies 15,24,26 have compared PCO between older hydrophilic IOL models and single-piece hydrophobic acrylic IOLs, with the results favoring the latter. To our knowledge, there are no studies comparing singlepiece hydrophobic acrylic IOLs and single-piece hydrophilic acrylic IOLs with a 360-degree square edge.…”

“…Similarly, we did not find a statistically significant difference in the incidence of PCO between the 2 IOLs; this is similar to the result in a previous study comparing the aspheric Akreos IOL with the spherical Akreos Fit IOL over a mean follow-up of 30 months. 39 Dysphotopsia is common in the immediate postoperative period with Akreos IOLs and Acrysof acrylic IOLs; in 1 study, 25 as many as 77% of patients were affected to some degree. However, the symptoms were transitory in many cases, decreasing to 31% in the (38) Acrysof IOL group and to 21% in the Akreos IOL group after 8 weeks.…”
