Rate Maximization for Partially Connected Hybrid Beamforming in Single-User MIMO Systems

Abstract: Partially connected hybrid beamforming (HBF) is a promising approach to alleviate the implementation of large scale millimeter-wave multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In this paper, we develop rate maximizing algorithms for the full array-and subarray-based processing strategies of partially connected HBF. We formulate the rate maximization problem as a weighted mean square error minimization problem and use alternating optimization to tackle it. Numerical results show that partially connected HBF … Show more

“…Compared to the digital part, optimization of the analog stage is more challenging as it must obey the unit-modulus constraint. Recently, new transceivers have started to emerge, which with the aid of amplitude modulators (AMs), also allow amplitude control for the analog stage [34], [52], [53]. Such transceivers alleviate the unit-modulus constraint but require additional hardware.…”

“…Traditionally, the analog domain processing consisted only of the unit amplitude phase-shifters. However, recently new transceivers have started to emerge which also allow amplitude manipulation (denoted as amplitude tapering in the antenna theory literature) in the analog domain for the base station consisting of large number of antenna, with the aid of amplitude modulators (AMs) [44], [45]. The only reference on FD communication to consider amplitude control for HYBF design is [30].…”

“…Pre-coding for fully connected sub arrays is considered in [ 37 ]. Authors in [ 38 ] has achieved rate maximization by performing the pre-coding and beamforming for a single user massive MIMO system with a partially connected hybrid structure. Both the pre-coder and beamformer is designed using alternating minimization technique.…”
