Rate and amplitude of adaptation to intermittent and continuous exercise in older men

Abstract: These results suggest that the amplitude and rate of change of select adaptations in men aged 60-70 yr are independent of the mode of training (i.e., continuous or intermittent exercise) when the absolute training intensity and the total amount of work completed were similar.

“…As a result, training intensities determined during exercise tests quickly become obsolete. The two walk tests described in this study, with intensities comparable to those used in individualized continuous and interval training programmes, [15][16][17][18] could therefore be suggested as an alternative to repeated symptom-limited exercise tests to determine optimal exercise intensity during training programmes. This kind of short walking test has already been suggested for cardiac patients.…”

“…If the subject did not meet the criteria, then the incremental exercise test was repeated on a subsequent day. The day-to-day intraclass correlation coefficient for repeated estimates of _ V V O 2peak in men [n=10, 64 (1) years] was 0.92 (Morris et al 2002).…”

“…Peak VO 2 improvement from exercise training may be linked to attenuated levels of oxidative stress which in turn may attenuate cytokine expression. Previous work in healthy older adults [32] and heart failure patients [33] has shown intermittent exercise programs to be at least more effective in improving peak VO 2 than a continuous regime that would produce greater cumulative oxidative stress. In our work, peak VO 2 was not significantly changed in patients who exercised despite utilizing a reasonable volume of exercise to elicit functional capacity changes.…”
