Rat endogenous pyrogen and fever

Abstract: Rat endogenous pyrogen (EP), prepared from the white blood cells of lipopolysaccharide-pretreated rats, produced a fever in both rabbits and rats. The effects of human, rabbit, and rat EP on the body temperatures of rabbits and rats were investigated to clarify differences in the febrile response to each kind of EP. The latency to fever onset and the time to peak fever induced by rat EP in rabbits and rats were significantly greater than those induced by human and rabbit EP. The maximum elevation of the body t… Show more

“…Many reports using the recombinant human IFNs have clarified that IFN-y is one of the endogenous mediators responsible for fever and acute phase response as well as IL-1, TNF and IL-6 [22,23,27]. Our correlative study of fever and IFN-y levels may raise the possibility that high titres of IFN-y perform ant• activity, acting as one of the endogenous pyrogens secreted during the acute phase of aseptic meningitis [17,30].…”

“…(Morimoto et al 1986). Considering that the molecular weight of IFN-y is almost the same as that of endogenous pyrogen (IL-1) (Dinarello, 1984), it is suggested that IFN-y induces the fever by both peripheral and central actions, as does endogenous pyrogen (IL-1).…”

“…The leucocytes were stimulated by a lipopolysaccharide of Salmonella typhosa endotoxin (Difco). The general procedures for preparing endogenous pyrogen have been previously described (Morimoto, Watanabe, Ono, Sakata & Murakami, 1986). Partial purification was effected by ultrafiltration using two types of membranes (lOYMIO, 1OXM50, Amicon), which removed all substances of molecular weight outside the range of 10000-50000.…”
