Rasch Analysis of the Independent Mobility Questionnaire

Abstract: The psychometric properties of the IMQ were promising. Our findings are useful for researchers evaluating the effectiveness of novel treatment technologies on mobility in a severely visually impaired population from the participant's perspective. However, further validation studies in larger samples are required to confirm our results.

“…Ultimately, 64 publications and 7 reviews (71 publications) were identified from the literature relating to 41 different QoL questionnaires (general health, vision-specific and glaucoma-specific questionnaires) which were included in the qualitative analysis (see Table, Supplemental Digital Content 3, which lists the 41 QoL questionnaires included in the analysis, http://links.lww.com/IJG/A562). 15,28–81…”

“…A flow diagram of our systematic review is included in the supplementary material. Raw data were provided for studies conducted at the Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA, Melbourne, Vic., Australia) [62], the University of Derby (Derby, UK) [34], and at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Salisbury, NC (VASNC) [25]. Data were also available for two studies in which some of the authors had been engaged: one study conducted at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI), Boston, MA [3,4,57]; and one conducted at the Schepens Eye Research Institute (SERI), Boston, MA [40].…”

“…There were no significant differences in gender [Pearson χ 2 (4, N = 594) = 8.92, p = 0.06] between the five data sources. However, there was a significant difference in age [Kruskal Wallis, χ 2 (4, N = 594) = 103.8, p < 0.001], with the CERA [62] sample being older than the SERI [40] sample (regression; t = 2.32; p = 0.021), which was older than the Derby sample (t = 2.59; p = 0.01) and VASNC [25] samples (t = 2.29; p = 0.02), which was older than the MEEI [4] sample (t = 4.22; p < 0.001). These differences can be attributed to the research questions being studied (e.g.…”

“…These include general quality of life questionnaires such as the WHO's WHOQOL [175,203], and SF-36 [124,242]. Vision-specific quality of life is assessed in more detail in patient-reported outcome measures such as the NEI-VFQ [167], independent mobility questionnaire [70], and the glaucoma-specific glaucoma symptom identifier [228] covering topics such as eye discomfort, drop side effects, and a variety of visual activities . It follows that we must take into account the effect of diagnosis and treatment on all aspects of physical, mental and social well-being when declaring treatment, a success in individual patients.…”
