Rare-gas dimer and halide lasers

Abstract: Dissociative electron attachment in effusive beams of S 2 has been studied in the incident electron energy range 0-11 eV. Two S − processes are observed at 2.4 and around 4.55 eV. From the ion kinetic energy and angular distributions, the symmetries of the dissociative S − 2 resonant states have been determined as 4 − u and 2 u . In the sulphur vapour S n (2 n 8), S − n formation occurs at zero energy and around 4 and 7.5 eV, in addition to the S − /S 2 processes.

“…The estimations of this work show that, at p = 760 Torr and n e ∼ 10 13 cm −3 , the ratio between ζ 1 and ζ 2 has the value ∼1. This means that, at the stage of volume discharge, excimer He molecules (He * 2 ) may be considered an additional reservoir of contributed energy feeding the discharge [38]. On the other hand, at the density of metastable atoms of ∼10 14 cm −3 , the maximum density of excimer molecules is also ∼10 14 cm −3 .…”

“…here σ is the photodissociation cross section of a stimulated transition on the low repulsive term, λ is the transition wavelength, [R * 2 ] is the concentration of excited molecules, ν is the spectral transition width, which was estimated in [3] as the energy difference between two projections of the vibration turn point on the low repulsive level. The xenon spectrum width quantitative estimate [3] yields 10 15 s −1 .…”

“…The xenon spectrum width quantitative estimate [3] yields 10 15 s −1 . According to references [3,8], this is an essential reason why the continuous wave (cw) VUV laser action by the inert gas excimers is basically impossible, and pumping parameters should be very high in the case of a pulsed laser action. It is an extremely difficult problem to obtain the excited molecules concentration of 10 15 cm −3 .…”
