Rare Earth Elements Geochemistry and C–O Isotope Characteristics of Hydrothermal Calcites: Implications for Fluid-Rock Reaction and Ore-Forming Processes in the Phapon Gold Deposit, NW Laos

Abstract: The Phapon gold deposit is located in the northern Laos and the northern segments of the Luang Prabang–Loei metallogenic belt. The lode-gold orebodies consist of auriferous calcite veins in the middle, and the surrounding siderite alteration and hematite alteration zones in red color. This deposit is hosted in Lower Permian limestone and controlled by a NE-trending ductile–brittle fault system, and it is characterized by the wallrock alteration of carbonatization and lack of quartz and metal sulfides. The hydr… Show more

“…During stage 1, the alkaline serpentinization-derived fluids [51,99] were rich in CO 2 , suggesting that the LREE mobilization in RIATD and RMTG was favored by the 18 O stable isotope plots for calcites of RAB and RCAB, limestone, and ophicalcite samples from the region of Kimi. Chondrite field from [83], diagenetic cements from [84,85], atmospheric-marine-biomass-mantle composition from [82], marine carbonate and sedimentary organic fields from [86,87], and hydrothermal calcite from [88].…”

“…Due to the underdeveloped economy of Laos and the lack of professional geological survey teams, the existing geological work in this area is low [14][15][16][17][18]. In addition, the complex natural conditions in the area, including extremely developed tropical rain forest, a few rock outcrops, strong weathering and inconvenient transportation in the forest area, greatly increase the difficulty of mineral exploration [19][20][21][22][23][24][25]. For these reasons, the traditional geological mapping or soil geochemical methods cannot be used to locate deep and concealed ore (mineralized) bodies alone.…”
