Instrumental neutron activation analysis was used to determine nine rare earth elements (REE), Sc and five high field-strength elements (HFSE) in the Multani Mitti (MM) clay. Chondrite-normalised rare earth element patterns for the MM clay compared with those for the Post-Archaean Australian Shale (PAAS), Upper Continental Crust (UCC) and North American Shale Composite (NASC) showed enrichment of light REEs and depletion of heavy REEs with a slight negative Eu anomaly. The Multani Mitti clay showed close resemblance to PAAS and NASC in its average REE and HFSE contents. Positive correlations between La/Ce, La/Sm, La/Yb, Zr/Hf, Th/U and Th/Ta ratios predict enrichment of LREEs, Zr and Th and depletion of HREEs. A parent source of felsic origin for the MM clay is also endorsed through the high La/Th and low Th/Sc ratios observed.

This is the twenty-forth annual review published in JAAS of the application of atomic spectrometry to the chemical analysis of environmental samples. This Update refers to papers published approximately between September 2007 and August 2008. In the analysis of air, work is focused on the need to collect and characterise ultrafines, i.e. particles below 100 nm in size, and such research is being facilitated through the development of air sampler technologies for subsequent off-line analysis of particles and aerosol mass spectrometric techniques for real-time measurements. In the analysis of water elemental speciation and development of vapour generation techniques for metalloid species continue to attach attention. Data quality and metrological issues are receiving renewed interest in part due to an increase in water quality regulations. In the field of soil and plant analysis, elemental fraction and speciation protocols based upon sequential extraction procedures, chromatographic separation procedures and synchrotron radiation x-ray techniques continue to be utilized and developed. As noted in previous Updates, laser ablation continues to go from strength to strength in being adopted as a solid sampling tool in geochemical analysis. Work continues to be focused on the production, characterization and certification of new geological reference materials. High purity gadolinia / Trace impurities / RNAA / INAASummary. Extensive use of gadolinia for different high technology applications such as infrared absorbing automotive glass, petroleum cracking catalyst, gadolinium-yttrium garnets and color TV tube phosphors requires a precise characterization of the material. A radiochemical neutron activation analysis (RNAA) procedure has been employed to investigate 16 trace impurities in high purity gadolinia. RNAA procedure enhanced the sensitivity of the technique. The concentrations of trace impurities ranged from 20 ng/g to 34 µg/g. The impurity contents were found to be low; therefore, their deleterious effects would be negligible.
