Rare chemical burns: Review of the Literature

Abstract: There are many chemicals that can cause burns. Although they are generally acidic and basic in nature, there are more than one million known chemical compounds, of which 300 have been declared highly hazardous chemical substances by the National Fire Protection Society. Chemical burns account for approximately 10.7% of all burn injuries and 30% of deaths because of burns. Chemicals can be classified as acid, alkali, organic, and inorganic compounds. Acids act by denaturing and coagulating proteins. Alkaline bu… Show more

“…Acidic agents cause coagulative necrosis by denaturing and coagulating proteins. Alkaline agents cause liquefactive necrosis by hydrolyzing key biological molecules such as lipids and proteins, which is deeper than acidic injury 7,8 . In our experiment, litmus paper detected two pH values of 3 and more than 12. pH 3 suggested HClO + HCl, and pH > 12 suggested NaOH.…”

“…Vinegar has been used to treat wounds by Hippocrates since the year 420 BC when its medicinal effects were already well‐known 1 . Interest in alternative medicine treatments and adjuvants to medical treatments is increasing 77 among both patients and doctors, leading some patients to attempt home treatment with vinegar, which can result in unintended complications, such as burns 68,70,71 . Vinegar represents a widely available and inexpensive therapeutic with potential in dermatology, and it is important for dermatologists to have an understanding of the evidence to make recommendations to guide patients in utilizing it safely and effectively.…”

“…In addition, a shorter replacement cycle of H 3 PO 4 increases the process cost . HF is also known to etch Si 3 N 4 , but it is a highly corrosive and dangerous substance that can seriously damage the skin upon contact. , HF also causes various problems in terms of EHS. Therefore, an environmentally benign Si 3 N 4 etching process without H 3 PO 4 and HF should be proposed.…”
