Rare Case of a Transverse Colon Schwannoma

Abstract: Schwannomas are tumors comprised of schwann cells of the peripheral nervous system and infrequently present in the gastrointestinal tract. Transverse colon schwannomas are an even more rare subtype of gastrointestinal schwannomas. This study presents the case of a transverse colon schwannoma, in addition to presenting a literature review.

“…Normally they are asymptomatic, therefore, the diagnosis is often accidental after an endoscopy. They are usually found in smooth muscle, and by CT, they are homogeneous exophytic tumors that could present cystic changes, necrosis and calcifications (1,(3)(4)(5). The diagnostic challenge is that this is a submucosa lesion, therefore, the endoscopy biopsy is only performed in the mucosa.…”

“…Immunohistochemistry can aid the diagnosis if positive for to S-100 and negative for C-KIT, CD-34 or DOG-1 (suggestive findings of GIST tumors), and actin and desmin (leiomyoma diagnostics) (4,5). These immunohistochemistry findings helped in the final diagnosis of the case report here.…”

“…Schwannomas are mesenchymal tumors arising from the Schwann cells. They account for approximately 5% of mesenchymal neoplasms [ 7 ]. The stomach is the most frequently encountered site of schwannomas along the gastrointestinal tract, yet it contributes to 0.2% of all diagnosed gastric neoplasms [ 8 ].…”
