Critical elements in coal and coal-bearing sequences (e.g., Li, Sc, V, Ga, Ge, Se, Y and rare earth elements, Zr, Nb, Au, Ag, platinum group elements, Re, and U) have attracted great attention because their concentrations in some cases may be comparable to those of conventional ore deposits. The enrichment of critical elements in coals, particularly those of Carboniferous-Permian and Cenozoic ages, have generally been attributed to within-plate (plume-related) volcanism and associated hydrothermal activity. However, Cretaceous coals are not commonly rich in critical elements, with the exception of some (e.g., Ge and U) in localised areas. This paper globally reviewed metalliferous coals from Siberia, the Russian Far East, Mongolia, South America, the United States and Mexico, Canada (Alberta and British Columbia), China, Africa, and Australasia (Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Northern Territory, New Zealand, Nelson, West Coast, Canterbury, Otago, and Southland). The world-class Ge-U or Ge deposits in North China, Mongolia, and Siberia are the only commercially significant representatives of the Cretaceous metalliferous coals, which are related to bio-chemical reduction of oxidized meteoric, hydrothermal, or sea waters by organic matter of the peat bogs. The common Cretaceous coals worldwide are generally not rich in critical elements because intensive igneous activity led to extensive acidification of terrestrial and marine waters, which are responsible for the low coal metallogenesis during the Cretaceous period, especially the Early Cretaceous time.

Инжиниринг георесурсов. – 2022. – Т. 333. – № 3. – С. 15-28. Актуальность. Балансовые запасы энергетических углей Восточной Сибири уникальны по объемам, возможностям освоения и использования. Цель: оценка доступных ресурсов энергетических углей региона при выделении ресурсов низкокачественных и местных углей и перспектив и возможностей их использования для нужд энергетики. Объекты: месторождения угля, балансовые запасы, местные угли, тенденции поставок и перспективы использования углей, проекты сооружения объектов энергетики на угле. Методы: методы системного анализа: классификация, структурирование и реструктурирование, анализ, формализация и конкретизация. Результаты. Выполнена оценка ресурсов энергетических углей Восточной Сибири. Анализ тенденций потребления энергетических углей региона показал незначительный рост поставок на электростанции при относительно стабильных поставках прочим потребителям. Рассчитан потенциально возможный уровень доступных в перспективе ресурсов углей для нужд энергетики, составляющий около 400 млн т/год. В перспективе наиболее востребованным направлением использования углей останется энергетика. При анализе балансовых запасов энергетических углей выделена категория местных, особенностью которых является их удаленность от населенных пунктов и транспортных коммуникаций. Оценка перспективы вовлечения местных углей в хозяйственный оборот показала возможность их использования только в котельных и мелких ТЭС при минимальной конкуренции с другими видами топлива. Возможный коридор поставок восточносибирского угля определяется вариантом развития экономики. Минимальные уровни поставок соответствуют незначительному их росту, а максимальные – росту более чем в два раза за счет ввода в эксплуатацию ТЭС для экспорта электроэнергии. Расчётные объемы потребления углей экспортными ТЭС могут составить от 35 до 50 млн т. Потенциальные возможности добычи энергетических углей региона значительно превышают их востребованность. Результаты анализа ресурсов энергетического угля Восточной Сибири показывают их надежность на длительную перспективу как источника топлива для объектов энергетики.

The coal industry in the eastern regions of Russia is of great economic and social importance. An analysis of the dynamics of coal deliveries from the eastern regions of Russia in 2010-2020 attested to a significant increase in exports while indicating reduced supplies to the domestic market. The eastern direction contributed most to the growth in coal exports. The eastern regions account for about 45% of Russia's coal balance reserves and have a significant potential for the expansion of mining the coal suitable for different uses: export, power generation, coke manufacturing and coke by-product recovery, and coal chemical industry. Based on the existing production capacity and coal mining development projects, the production of coal in the eastern regions is expected to reach up to 195-275 million tons by 2035 and its export volumes are estimated at 75-130 million tons. The expansion of coal supplies is influenced by a variety of factors, including the demand for coal; the condition and capabilities of transport infrastructure; the availability of coal balance reserves and production capacities; the decarbonization of the world's economies; geographical, climatic, geopolitical, and other conditions. The minimum levels of coal supplies correspond to their insignificant growth in the domestic market with moderate growth in exports, and the maximum levels correspond to the maximum possible growth of exports and the commissioning of coal-fired thermal power plants. The potential of the region to supply coal far exceeds the demand for it.
